SYSTEM FORMAT &REST EASY STEPS

Edited by Teresa, Jack Herrick, Nota, Chris Hadley and 6 others
Formatting a computer involves erasing all of the data on the computer's hard drive, and then reinstalling the operating system so that the computer is restored to factory defaults. This can be useful if your computer is malfunctioning, or you are planning on selling or donating it. Follow this guide to format your Windows 7 or Mac OS X computer.

Method 1 of 2: Windows

  1. 1
Backup your data. When you format a computer, you will lose all of your files and data. The programs can’t be backed up; they will need to be reinstalled. Any files—including documents, music, pictures, and videos—that you want to save need to be copied to a backup location.
    • You can use DVDs, CDs, external hard drives, flash drives, or the cloud, depending on how much data you have to backup.

  2. 2
Set your BIOS to boot from CD. To do this, restart the computer and enter the setup screen when the manufacturer logo appears. The key to do this will be displayed, and varies by manufacturer. The most common keys are F2, F10, F12, and Del.

    • Once in the BIOS menu, select the Boot menu. Change the order of devices so that your computer boots from CD before booting from the hard drive. Save your changes and exit. Your computer will restart.
    • If you are installing from a flash drive, then you will need to set the BIOS to boot from removable storage
  3. 3
Begin Setup. If the CD has been inserted and the BIOS is set correctly, you will see a message telling you to “Press any key to boot from CD…” Press a key on the keyboard and the setup process for Windows 7 will launch.
    • Your system may automatically launch the setup program without asking you to press any key.
  4. 4
Watch the Windows files load. After completion, the Windows 7 logo will appear. No files have been altered on your computer yet. Your data will be deleted in later steps.
  5. 5
Choose your preferences. You will be prompted to confirm your Language, Time & Currency format, and Keyboard or input method. Select the appropriate options for you and click Next.
  6. 6
Click Install Now. Do not click Repair Computer, even if you are repairing a computer by reinstalling Windows. Once clicked, Setup will begin loading the files it needs to continue.
  7. 7
Read and accept the terms. In order to advance, you must indicate that you have read and agree to Microsoft’s terms of use. Be sure to read through it so that you know your rights and limitations as a user.
  8. 8
Choose Custom install. This will allow you to perform a clean installation. Formatting the computer means wiping it of all the data that is on it, so you will be performing a clean installation, so that you will be given the option to erase the disk.
  9. 9
Delete the partition. A window will open asking where you would like to install Windows. In order to perform a clean install, you need to delete the old partition and start with a clean slate. Click “Drive options (advanced).” This will give you the ability to delete and create partitions.
    • Select the partition of your existing operating system and click the Delete button.

    • If your hard drive has multiple partitions, be sure to delete the correct one. Any data on a deleted partition is lost for good.

    • Confirm the deletion process.

  10. 10
Select the Unallocated Space and click Next. There is no need to create a partition before you install Windows 7, this is done automatically.
  11. 11
Wait while Windows installs files. The percentage next to Expanding Windows files will steadily increase. This part of the process can take up to 30 minutes.
    • Windows will automatically restart your computer when finished.

    • Setup will launch again, and a message will tell you that Setup is updating registry settings.

    • Setup will then configure your computer’s services. This happens every time you start Windows, but will happen in the background next time.

    • A window will open letting you know that Windows is completing the installation. Your computer will restart again when this is complete.

    • Setup will now load drivers and check video settings. This part does not require any input from you.

  12. 12
Enter your user name and computer name. Your username will be used to log in to the computer and personalize your account. Your computer name is the name that your computer will display on the network.
    • You can add more users later through the Windows 7 control panel.
    • Windows will ask you for a password. This is optional but highly recommended, especially if the computer will be accessible by users other than yourself. If you’d rather not have a password, leave the fields blank and click Next.

  13. 13
Enter your product key. This is the 25-character key that came with your copy of Windows. Check the “Automatically activate Windows when I’m online” to have Windows automatically verify your key the next time it is connected to the internet.

  14. 14
Select your Windows Update option. To make sure that your copy of Windows runs securely and stably, it is highly recommended that you choose one of the first two options. The first option will install all updates automatically, the second option will prompt you when important updates are available.
  15. 15
Select your date and time. These should be correct already as they are linked to your BIOS, but you can change them now if they are not. Check the box if your area observes Daylight Savings.
  16. 16
Select network preferences. If your computer is connected to a network, you will be given an option to identify that network. Most users will select Home or Work network. If your computer is being used in a public place, select Public network. Mobile broadband users should always select Public network.
    • Windows will now attempt to connect your computer to the network. This process is completely automated.
  17. 17
Explore your desktop. After one final loading screen, your new Windows 7 desktop will appear. Installation is now complete.

Method 2 of 2: Mac OS X

  2. 2
Reboot your Mac. While the computer is rebooting, hold down the Command + R keys. This will open the Recovery menu. Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
  3. 3
Format your disk. Select your hard drive from the left frame in the Disk Utility. Select the Erase tab. In the Format dropdown menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Enter any name you would like and then click Erase.
    • All of the data will be deleted from the disk at this point. Make sure you have properly backed up any important files.
    • Close Disk Utility after the Erase process is complete.
  4. 4
Begin the Mac OS X installation process. Verify that you are connected to a network and select Reinstall Mac OS X. You will need to verify your license by entering your Apple ID and password. You will also need to accept the license agreements.
  5. 5
Select the disk to install to. The installer will prompt you to select a disk to install the OS to. Select the disk that you just erased using Disk Utility.
  6. 6
Wait for the process to complete. Mac OS X will begin installing itself, and requires no input from the user. The computer may reboot during the installation process. After installation is complete, the desktop appears.

Method 1 of 3: Determining Which Operating System to Install

  1. Install a New Operating System on Your Computer Step 1.jpg
    1
Check the system requirements. If you’ve decided that you want to install a new operating system, you’ll first need to figure out which one you want to use. Operating systems have varying system requirements, so if you have an older computer, make sure that you can handle a newer operating system.
    • Most Windows installations require at least 1 GB of RAM, and at least 15-20 GB of hard disk space. Make sure that your computer can accommodate this. If not, you may need to install an older operating system, such as Windows XP.
    • Linux operating systems typically don’t require as much space and computing power as Windows operating systems. The requirements vary depending on the distribution you choose (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, etc.).
    Ad
  2. 2
Decide whether to purchase or download. Windows licenses need to be purchased. Each license comes with a key good for one installation. Most Linux distributions are free to download and install as much as you’d like, though some Enterprise versions are closed and require purchase (Red Hat, SUSE, etc.).
  3. 3
Research your software compatibility. Make sure that the operating system you want to install supports the programs that you want to use. If you use Microsoft Office for work, you won’t be able to install it on a Linux machine. There are substitute programs available, but the functionality may be limited.
    • Many games that work on Windows will not work on Linux. The number of supported titles is growing, but be aware that if you are an avid gamer your library might not transfer over smoothly.
  4. 4
Obtain your new operating system. If you’ve purchased a copy of Windows from a store, you should have received an installation disc along with your product code. If you don’t have the disc, but have a valid code, you can download a copy of the disc online. If you are installing Linux, you can download an ISO of the distribution from the developer’s website.
  5. 5
Backup your data. When you are installing a new operating system, you are most likely going to be wiping the hard drive in the process. This means that you will lose all of your files on the computer, unless you back them up. Always make sure that any important files are copied to a backup location before starting the installation process. Use an external hard drive or burn the data to DVDs.
    • If you are installing the operating system alongside your existing one, you most likely will not have to delete any data. It is still wise to backup important files just in case.
    • You cannot backup programs; they will need to be reinstalled once you have finished installing your new operating system.

Method 2 of 3: Installing Your New Operating System

  1. 1
Determine your installation order. If you are installing a Linux distribution that you want to run alongside Windows, you need to install Windows first and then Linux. This is because Windows has a very strict boot loader that needs to be in place before Linux is installed, otherwise Windows won’t load.
  2. Install a New Operating System on Your Computer Step 4.jpg
    2
Boot from your installation disc. Insert the installation disc into your optical; drive, and reboot your computer. Normally a computer boots from the hard drive first, so you will need to adjust some settings in your BIOS in order to boot from the disc drive. You can enter the BIOS by hitting the designated Setup key during the boot process. The key will be displayed on the same screen as your manufacturer’s logo.
    • Common Setup keys include F2, F10, F12, and Del/Delete.
    • Once you are in the Setup menu, navigate to the Boot section. Set your DVD/CD drive as the first boot device. If you are installing from a USB drive, make sure that the drive is inserted and then select it as the first boot device.
    • Once you’ve selected the correct drive, save your changes and exit Setup. Your computer will reboot.
  3. 3
Try your Linux distribution before installing. Most Linux distributions come with a copy that can be loaded directly from the installation disc. This will allow you to “test drive” your new operating system before you commit to the installation process. Once you are ready to install, click the Installation program on the desktop.
    • This is only possible with Linux distributions. Windows does not allow you to test out the operating system before you install.
  4. 4
Wait for the Setup program to load. No matter which operating system you choose, the setup program will need to copy some files to your computer before it can continue. This can take several minutes, depending on the speed of your computer’s hardware.
    • You will most likely need to choose some basic options, such as language and keyboard layout.
  5. 5
Enter your product key. If you are installing Windows 8, you will need to enter your product key before you can begin installation. Older Windows versions will ask for the product key after installation is complete. Linux users will not need a product key, unless it is a purchased version such as Red Hat.
  6. 6
Choose your installation type. Windows will give you the option of Upgrading or performing a Custom installation. Even if you are upgrading an older version of Windows, it is highly recommended that you choose Custom and start from scratch. This will minimize problems that may arise later from combining old settings and new ones.
    • If you are installing Linux, you will be given the option to install alongside your existing operating system (Windows), or to erase the disk and install Linux by itself. Choose the option that best meets your needs. If you choose to install alongside Windows, you will be given the option to choose how much hard disk space you want to designate for Linux.
  7. 7
Format your partitions. If you are installing Windows, you will need to choose which hard drive partition you want to install it on. Deleting partitions will wipe the data on the partition and return the space to the Unallocated section. Select the unallocated space and create a new partition.
    • If you are installing Linux, the partition needs to be formatted in the Ext4 format.
  8. 8
Set your Linux options. Before installation begins, your Linux installer will ask you for your timezone, and you will need to create a username and password. You will use this to log in to your Linux distribution as well as authorize system changes.
    • Windows users will fill out personal information after the installation is complete.
  9. 9
Wait for the installation to complete. Depending on the speed of your computer, this can take up to an hour to finish. Most installations are hands-off at this point. Your computer may reboot several times during the installation process.
  10. 10
Create your Windows login. Once your Windows installation is complete, you will need to create a username. You can also choose to create a password, though this is not necessary. After creating your login info, you will be asked for your product key.
    • In Windows 8, you will be asked to customize the colors first. After that, you can choose to either log in with a Microsoft account, or use a more traditional Windows username.
  11. 11
Install your drivers and programs. Once installation is complete, you will be taken to your new desktop. Forom here, you can begin installing your programs and making sure that your drivers are installed an up to date. Make sure to install an antivirus program if you are going to be connecting to the internet.

CMPUPUTER REPAIR

Edited by Kevin Smith, Mark Davis, Chris Hadley, Carolyn Barratt and 15 others

Any abnormality in the integrated components of a computer can prove harmful to its performance, but some general computer issues can be addressed at personal level. There are effective computer repair tips and tricks which can be implemented to resolve these problems. Computer repair is important because we are becoming dependent on it for every personal and professional task. There are variety of problems; some are simple while others are complicated. However, you can repair your system on your own by following some tips and tricks. Some of them are discussed here:
Ad

Method 1 of 2: Computer freezing

Computers may freeze on account of any hardware or software issue, so here you need to understand the exact reason behind it. Notice if the issue started when you connected any hardware peripherals like a printer or scanner; then it might be due to a driver conflict. If the issue occurred after assembling a new hard drive, then it might be due to insufficient power or too much heat. Follow the troubleshooting pattern below to repair your computer, if such problems occur.
  1. Replace the Battery in Your PC Step 2.jpg
    1
Give your computer a bit of rest. If you leave your computer on all the time, you can often fix a problem by unplugging it, waiting at least 30 seconds, and plugging it back in. By cutting off the power to the motherboard, it allows the hardware to reset and the memory to clear.
    Ad
  2. Replace the Battery in Your PC Step 3.jpg
    2
Determine if your computer becomes too hot. You will need to take a look inside for this. Remember that any time you need to open up your computer cabinet, shut down your computer and unplug it. If you have long hair, tie it back. Take off any jewelry that might get in the way. Also avoid wearing any clothing that produces a lot of static, as a spark can damage hardware and cause intermittent, hard-to-troubleshoot problems.
  3. Repair Computer Step 3.jpg
    3
Open the cabinet of your computer and check the temperature of the metal chassis. If it’s hot, then certainly there is some thermal problem. Gently examine the front and rear fans and blow out any dust. You can apply a clean cloth to dust out hidden particles. Remember: Your computer must be shut down while you're cleaning inside it.
    • If you have more than one hard drive in your computer, avoid installing them right next to each other in the chassis; this makes them more prone to heat failure. To install an extra hard drive in a wide slot, such as the slot that holds your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you can buy mounting brackets at a store that sells computer parts.
      Repair Computer Step 3Bullet1.jpg
    • Even if your computer isn't having problems, it's a good idea to clean the fans regularly.
      Repair Computer Step 3Bullet2.jpg
    • Before you close up the case, check all the cables and make sure everything is still plugged in. If you have to reset a video card or a stick of memory, avoid applying heavy pressure to the motherboard as this can damage it.
Disable the Onboard Graphics and Install a New Graphics Card in Your HP Pavilion 6630 Step 7.jpg
  4. Repair Computer Step 4.jpg
    4
Inspect your Device Drivers. Many times when doing a Windows Update, your system may download and install an incorrect driver, which may result in the computer freezing. You can check the status of drivers from Device Manager. Unplug your USB device, if connected. Power-on your computer and see if it works. If it does, good; otherwise you can restore your computer to an earlier configuration. System Restore will roll your system back to an earlier set of drivers.
  5. Repair Computer Step 5.jpg
    5
Access System Restore at Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore to try and restore whatever settings you might have changed,
  6. Repair Computer Step 6.jpg
    6
Inspect your Hard Disk.Your hard disk is a storehouse of information, so when it gets used for a long duration it might get cluttered and patchy; this slows down the performance of your computer. Hence, use your Windows utility CHKDSK to scan and remove bad sectors on regular basis. It is the best preventive way of maintaining computer health.

Method 2 of 2: Blue Screen of Death

  1. Repair Computer Step 7.jpg
    1
Understand the Blue Screen of Death. A more difficult time comes when your computer refuses to load any These gain access to your computer through loopholes in application software or in the operating system. To eliminate these programs and fix your computer, scan with a compatible anti-virus program.
    • Registry Errors. The Windows Registry holds information regarding hardware and software settings on your computer. If a malicious program corrupts the Registry, it may result in a blue screen error. These problems could be fixed either manually, by editing the Registry directly, or with third-party software that can check and repair a corrupted Registry. Always back up the Registry before attempting to edit it.

NEW RECIPE TIPS

patholi recipe for ganesh chaturthi – step by stepS

patholi – sweet recipe for the ganesh chaturthi festival.

patholi are steamed rice rolls which are stuffed with fresh coconut and jaggery mixture. patholi are made during the gauri and ganesha festival here. what makes the patholi special is the steaming technique. these rolls are steamed in fresh turmeric leaves.
fresh & tender turmeric leaves have such a sweet fragrance. i wish i could make you guys get the fragrance of turmeric leaves. it is a beautiful sweet fragrance.
the patholi rolls while steaming get the aroma and flavor from the turmeric leaves. this is what makes the patholi special. when steaming these delicacies, the whole kitchen smells divine.
in the months of july-aug-sept, we get fresh turmeric leaves in the goan and konkan coastal belt of india.
fresh turmeric leaves for patholi
besides making this fragrant sweet dish, even fish or masala stuffed fish is steamed in the turmeric leaves.
i should also mention cucumber idlis that are steamed in these aromatic leaves. i had almost forgotten about these idlis. i plan to make them soon.
my mom makes patholi in these months and this is my mom’s recipe. she actually soaks the rice and grinds it. the batter is not fermented.
i chose the easy way. i made patholis with rice flour. if possible use fine rice flour. mine weren’t that fine, but the patholi was great.
after a long long time (read 5 years) i savored and relished patholi and it reminded me of the times when mom would make these for us.
the patholi tastes similar to modak except for the turmeric leaves aroma. thin & soft steamed rice cover stuffed with the heavenly coconut and melted jaggery infused with the aroma of cardamom and not to forget the turmeric leaves.
what i like about this delicacy is that these are vegan, healthy & oil-free for a sweet. indian sweets, specifically are laden with oil, ghee, fats and sugar.
they are also a gluten free for a sweet dessert. along with so many good points, they have the goodness of turmeric leaves. we all know how much good is turmeric for the body.
patholi & turmeric leaves
if you cannot get turmeric leaves, then you can also steam the patholi in banana leaves.
i am showing a step by step version of making the patholi. thanks to my sis who took the photos when i was making the patholi. it is a bit lengthy process but you will sure enjoy the results.
just to let you know, in between making the patholi, i urgently got a call from somewhere and i had to go out. i had kept some patholis to steam and told my sis to take care of the rest before i came. my sis made the remaining patholi and all the steamed patholis she stacked them up one above the other.
as a result due to the steam & heat the patholi got stuck to each other :-( it was difficult to separate them and somehow i could barely manage a few better ones for the final pics. by the time i came it was already getting dark, so just took some not so good shots :-(
i hope in spite of the broken patholis, you try making these at home. your family is going to love it. trust me…

STRAWBERRY CAKE SWEET TIPS

cream gateau cake

by.laxman

eggless strawberry cream cake, eggless strawberry cream cake recipe

strawberry cream cake recipe - i had made this strawberry cream cake quite some time back. with the christmas coming up in a day’s time, i thought why not write this post. strawberries are in season in india, so you can make a good use of them in this cake.
i had made the eggless vanilla cake  recipe specifically to make this cake. you can use any sponge cake or vanilla cake as a base. the cake is sandwiched with strawberry cream icing and topped with a whipped cream frosting. i have used fresh strawberries to make this cake but you can use canned strawberries also.
i have used amul cream to make this icing. as you will see in the pics, the amul cream really worked well to my surprise to give stiff peaks. i used icing sugar to make the cream icing and that helped the cream to get stiff peaks. otherwise its difficult to whip amul cream really well. later i tried with sugar to get stiff peaks but it did not happen as good as this one.
i have not been able to give a professional touch to this strawberry cream cake as i did not have a palette knife nor a cake stand. with a regular spatula i spread & evened the icing. i did not even slice the risen dome from the top. the perfection does not matter, when you are making such desserts for your loved ones. what matters is that they enjoy the treat you made for them.
this cake was a surprise as i never knew that my hubby is fond of cakes with cream icings. i shall be adding more pastries and cakes with icings recipes in the future. this is a rich creamy cake and meant for festive occasions or birthday or anniversary celebrations. you can make the whole cake a day before and cover and keep in the fridge, so that the sliced strawberries on the top don’t dry out
in the step by step, i am sharing the filling and frosting pics. you can see the step by step eggless vanilla cake recipe. in the recipe details below, i have mentioned the ingredients and process of making the eggless vanilla cake.
with this rich festive cake, wishing everybody a merry christmas and happy new year in advance.

lets start step by step eggless strawberry cream gateau cake recipe:

1. first mix sugar with chopped strawberries and keep aside for 30-40 minutes in the fridge. the strawberries would release their juices. this process is called as maceration.
mix sugar with chopped strawberries
2.beat cream with icing sugar & vanilla extract with a hand held electric beater or in a stand mixer attached with the wire whip blade. if using a stand mixer beat at the highest speed till you get stiff peaks.

3. don’t overdo the beating as the cream might turn into butter, when you get stiff peaks, just stop the mixer or beater.

4. slice the sponge or vanilla cake into half.

5. brush the strawberry juice from the macerated strawberries on the top of the cake slice evenly. don’t add too much of the juice as the cake might become soggy. spread all the chopped strawberries on the cake evenly. the leftover juice you can slurp :-)
spread out the strawberries on the cake
6. spread a part of whipped cream on top of the strawberry filling evenly.

7. place the other half of the cake.

  7. when the butter is still warm or a bit hot, add the sugar to the melted butter.
  8. stir and mix well. keep aside.
  9. now in a measuring cup or in a small bowl, whisk the 3 tbsp yogurt + 1 tbsp water till smooth.

  11. pour the butter+sugar mixture, ½ cup water and the frothing yogurt+vinegar+baking soda into the sieved flour.
  12. add vanilla extract.
  13. be quick enough to fold and make a lump free batter. don’t over do the folding.
  14. pour the batter in the greased baking pan.
  15. shake and tap the sides of the pan so that air bubbles are released.
  16. place the pan in the preheated oven in the center rack.
  17. keep the heating in both the bottom and top elements of the oven on.
  18. bake at 180 degrees C for 30-35 minutes or more till a tooth pick inserted in the cake comes out clean.
  19. if the vanilla cake browns too quickly on the top, then cover the top with an aluminium foil or butter paper.
  20. once done let the vanilla cake stand at room temperature for 7-8 minutes.
  21. then with the help of oven mitts, gently remove the vanilla cake on a wired tray or rack.
  22. once the vanilla cake cools, you can serve the eggless vanilla cake as it is or use the vanilla cake to make pastries or gateau.
  23. let the cake cool completely before you prepare the icing.
preparing the icing and filling:
  1. rinse the strawberries well and then dry them with kitchen napkin.
  2. reserve about 5-6 small to medium strawberries for the decoration and keep them in the fridge.
  3. hull and chop the rest of the strawberries.
  4. take the chopped strawberries and about 3 to 4 tbsp sugar in a bowl.
  5. the proportion of sugar here depends on the sweetness of the strawberries.
  6. mix the sugar with the strawberries and keep aside for at least 30-40 mins to macerate in the fridge. you can also keep them overnight.
  7. in a stand mixer fitted with the wired whip blade, whip the cream and icing sugar along with vanilla extract, at high speed till you get stiff peaks in the cream.
  8. taste the cream and add more sugar if required.
  9. you can also use a hand held electric beater to whip the cream.
  10. the cream should have stiff peaks – meaning on turning the bowl the cream should not fall down.
assembling the cake:
  1. slice the cake with a serrated knife from the center carefully into two equal halves.
  2. brush the syrup from the chilled macerated strawberries lightly on one half of the cake.
  3. spread the chopped strawberries evenly on the cake.
  4. spread another layer of the whipped cream evenly on the cake.
  5. keep the other cake slice over.
  6. now spread the remaining whipped cream all over the cake with a palette knife or spatula evenly.
  7. keep the cake in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours so that the cream icing sets.
  8. slice the strawberries which we had chilled for decorating the cake and keep them aside.
  9. remove the cake and decorate the cake with the fresh strawberry slices.
  10. serve the strawberry cream cake immediately.
  11. or you can keep it covered in the fridge and then serve later.
  12. its advisable to finish this strawberry cream cake in a day or two.
Notes
you can even cook the chopped strawberries with sugar instead of macerating them. the quantity of sugar can be adjusted depending on the sweetness of the strawberries.
